PALS Negligence Claims

The NHS Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) was established to provide information and advice to patients and their families. PALS consultants can answer questions about your health, recommend ways you can become more involved and therefore have more control over the decisions made about your treatment and care, and assist with concerns you have about the standard of care you have received from an NHS provider. Most people find the service helpful. However, there are occasions when PALS does not adequately resolve an issue to a patient’s satisfaction.

What is PALS Negligence?

Normally it is PALS who handles complaints about poor standards of service and care in the NHS, but what happens when you want to complain about the way they handled your issue?

The process for complaints in the NHS is first to raise your concerns with the staff member responsible for your care, whether it is your GP, nurse, midwife, dentist, or another practitioner. If they ignore your worries or do not resolve the situation to your satisfaction, you should contact the trust’s customer care team and ask them to investigate the matter. If you are still unhappy with the response, then you can then raise a formal complaint with PALS for them to investigate and resolve. Formal charges do not need to relate to medical negligence, and they should be made within a year of the event.
